School
Children attending classes at the new school.
"Mrs. Miles taught the younger children in a room in her home while Mr. Miles conducted school for the older pupils in the Town Hall." Florence Call Cowles
Children in Algona began attending school when they were five years old. The youngest students met in their teacher's home. The older children attended classes at the Town Hall. All grades met in one room. The very first teacher to teach in the Town Hall school was Miss Flavia Fleming. The students learned to read using a book called the McGuffey Reader. The book also taught them about being a good person and a good citizen.
In 1867 a new school was built where the O.B. Laing Middle School is now standing. The building cost $3,200.The students started every day with a song or a Bible verse. They wrote on slates with chalk or a pencil. The students brought their own lunches to school. They had to help out with chores at school: getting fuel for the stove, carrying pails of water, clapping the erasers, etc. At recess the students played such games as Fox & Goose, Pump, Pump Pull Away, Tag and Red Rover.
