From these maps we had good reason to believe that we should find lumber suitable for milling purposes, and also should find clear, cold water, well stocked with trout." William Ingham
William Ingham was born at Ingham's Mills, Herkimer County, New York in 1827.
Mr. Ingham traveled west in the 1850's and settled north of Algona.
He loved the outdoors and adventure. He was happiest when he was out riding his horse and hunting or exploring the unsettled areas around Algona. Many times he would be called out to help men stranded by blizzards or storms.
Mr. Ingham loved to fish and hunt. He was the only settler to ever shoot a buffalo. The Sioux name for buffalo is "Titonka" which means "big cow" or "buffalo." Mr. Ingham suggested that the town near the site of the buffalo shooting be called Titonka to commemorate the event.
In 1862, following an Sioux attack in New Ulm, MN, Mr. Ingham helped to organize the Northern Border Brigade. This brigade built a series of forts to protect the settlers of north central Iowa from the Sioux. Mr. Ingham served as captain of the brig
Mr. Ingham and his wife, Caroline, moved to town in 1865. Mr. Ingham died in 1927.
